When he was young, Horace met Constance who was an unwilling member of a circus sideshow and fell in love with her despite her obesity. One Halloween day as children tormented her, Constance tried hurting them with an axe, but lost her footing and fell in the basement of the house also wet cement buried her body. Horace finished the house after Constance's death knowing it was what she would have wanted. Aware that Constance's spirit made the house come alive, Horace tried to keeping people away by pretending to hating them for their safety. The trio consult Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, a supposed expert on the supernatural.

Alas, the film hasn’t got much more respect for parents or authority figures in general. A couple of cops, one a blasé donut-chomping yahoo and the other a jittery, bug-eyed black rookie, add to the general aura of adult incompetence. In a way, Monster House is a bracingly icy breath of fresh air, a tween-oriented family film that is unabashedly out to frighten. It’s an excursion into primal fears of haunted houses and graveyards — of places you don’t want to walk past at night, of dark and sinister forces that are not just spooky or macabre, but downright sinister and even vengeful.

They learn the house is a rare monster created when a human soul merges with a man-made structure, and that it can only be killed by destroying its heart. They conclude that the heart must be the furnace and Chowder provides a cold medicine-filled dummy that should cause the house to sleep long enough for them to douse the furnace. Police Officers Landers and Lister thwart their plan and they are arrested when Landers finds the cold medicine stolen from Chowder's father's pharmacy inside the dummy. The house then eats the officers and their car in which DJ, Chowder and Jenny have been shut. Starring the voices of Mitchel Musso, Sam Lerner, Spencer Locke, Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film features human characters animated using live-action motion capture. The trio consults supernatural expert Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, who speculates the house must be a rare type of monster created by the fusion of a human's spirit and a man-made object that can only be unbound when its heart is struck. Ascertaining that the presumably-deceased Nebbercracker is the cause, the trio construct a dummy filled with cough syrup Chowder stole from a pharmacy owned by his father. They offer the dummy to the house to eat, hoping to put it to sleep so they can find its "heart" (its furnace). Landers and Lister then inadvertently foil the plan as the former discovers the stolen medicine; as they attempt to arrest the trio, the house soon eats them all. Separated from the officers, the children explore the sleeping house and end up in its basement.

A stereoscopic 3-D version of the film was created and had a limited special release in digital 3-D stereo along with the "flat" version. It was released in approximately 200 theaters equipped for new RealD Cinema digital 3-D stereoscopic projection. Since the original source material was "built" in virtual 3-D, it created a very rich stereoscopic environment. DJ tells Mr. Nebbercracker it is time to let the house go, but it overhears. The house breaks free from its foundation and chases the group to a construction site.
Inevitably, as the story progresses, spookiness gradually gives way to thrills and finally slam-bang action, culminating in a somewhat overextended climactic set piece. Even so, the filmmakers have a couple of tricks up their sleeve, including climactic revelations both horrifying and poignant, that prevent Monster House from degenerating into no more than Action House. Even the macabre Halloweentown world of The Nightmare Before Christmas was more grotesque than malevolent, populated by ghoulish citizens who only wanted to put on a good show and scare everyone out of their wits without doing any real harm. More recently, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride offered horror moments of a somewhat more grownup sort, but again depicted a macabre vision of the uncanny that was more misunderstood than malevolent. Nebbercracker attempts to convince the house that it should be destroyed while holding stick of dynamite, but the house refuses. As it tries to eat him, Chowder fights the house off with an excavator, causing it to fall into a pit. DJ is given the dynamite and he and Jenny climb to the top of a tower crane while Chowder distracts the horse. The trio see Horace with his wife Constance's ghost for the last time before she fades away. DJ apologises to him for the loss of his house and wife, but Mr. Nebbercracker thanks DJ and the kids for freeing him and Constance. That night, children in their Halloween costumes are lined up at the site of Mr. Nebbercracker's house where DJ, Chowder and Jenny help him return the toys to their owners.
DJ's parents Mr. and Mrs. Walters leave town for the weekend for a dentist convention and leaving him in the care of Zee. DJ's friend Chowder loses his basketball on Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn. After the ambulance leaves, Chowder heads home and DJ's babysitter Elizabeth arrives but DJ is not that excited seeing her even when she tries getting his attention about an smbulamce she saw. Just DJ is gone upstairs, Zee puts a tape cassette in the radio and plays her loud music at full volume, then calls her friends over when she's not supposed to. DJ slams the door to his room and goes to bed when he starts having a nightmare.
They find all the toys Nebbercracker had stolen and a shrine to his wife, Constance the Giantess, whose skeletal remains are encased in cement. The house soon awakens and attacks them, but they trigger its gag reflex by grabbing its uvula equivalent (a chandelier), forcing it to vomit them outside. Set in October of 1997, a little girl named Eliza rides her tricycle around the neighborhood, singing along, but she hits the lawn, and it gets stuck.
In the aftermath, the quartet gather at the house's still-intact basement, returning everything Nebbercracker stole to their rightful owners. During the credits after everyone leaves, the house's victims emerge from the basement unharmed, including Bones, who discovers that Zee is now dating Skull. Monster House was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Releasing on July 21, 2006. It received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $142 million worldwide against a $75 million budget.
It received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, but lost to Happy Feet and Cars, respectively.
